שעפסעלאך LITTLE SHEEP
This picture is called שעפסעלאך that is a Yiddish word for a little sheep. There is a wonderful story that I heard from my friend Miriam Adler about Shepsalach and Shteiner and the story goes as follows: In 1936, Rabbi Ahron Adler’s grandfather visited Israel considering aliya. He concluded that a state cannot be created by “shepsalach and steiner” (sheep and stones). The family stayed in Berlin and subsequently migrated to America. During a visit to America in 1985 after Rabbi Adler made aliya with his family (in 1979), he asked his grandfather what he says now about the state of Israel and “shepsalach and steiner”. He happily replied that he made a mistake and he is delighted that he was wrong! Consider the following questions with your little sheep. What do the sheep mean?
