I am of the opinion that every picture tells a story. We are so used to reading stories to our children that often we forget to ask our children to tell us a story.
One of the goals of The Children’s Collection is to have our children and grandchildren tell us the story of each picture and allow them to tell us a different story each time. Children are full of innocence, of holiness ,inquisitiveness and enthusiasm. [note that the word enthusiastic is from the two Greek words which means full of God.] It is therefore magical to see the world and hear its story out of the mouths of babes.
We are told that when the Almighty decided to give the Torah to the Jewish people he wanted to make sure that he had guarantors. after all the Torah is priceless and so God hoped that it wouldn’t be used, misused and abused. He sought out guarantors. The people of Israel suggested the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, but God was not reassured. Other options were offered and in the end the children were chosen to be the guarantors. It was clear that their word would ring true since they promised to uphold the Torah.
I have called it שירו לה’ שיר חדש. (Sing to G-d a new song). What does that mean?
What does the elephant do with his trunk? What sound does the elephant make?
This picture is called שעפסעלאך that is a Yiddish word for a little sheep.
What do you see in this picture? What sounds do you hear?
